Plymouth River School Basketball Pavilion Closed for Repairs
The Hingham School Committee learned this week that the basketball pavilion at Plymouth River School has been closed to both recreational and school use after an engineering inspection flagged structural concerns, pending a full rehab the Recreation Commission hopes to bring to town meeting.
HINGHAM --
TOWN -- At the Oct. 19 School Committee meeting, a district official reported that the Recreation Commission had been planning to seek town funds to repair the pavilion at Plymouth River School, described as a basketball court with a shed-like structure over it. During the engineering review needed to put forward that repair plan, the firm LKB advised the district to close the pavilion in the interim until it can be "completely rehabbed and overhauled." The official said the pavilion is now closed to both recreational and school use, with temporary fencing installed 10 feet from its perimeter to keep children and community members away. The district said it is working with the Recreation Department, which has "domain over" the pavilion as part of the school's fields, and plans to bring a repair proposal to town meeting.
YOUTH LEAGUES -- Hingham Youth Basketball held the first of two Girls Travel Basketball evaluation sessions on Monday, Oct. 19, at McKelvey Gymnasium at Derby Academy, covering grades 3 through 8. A second round of evaluations is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 26, at the same location. According to the organization's website, players must register for the Hingham Girls Basketball League, known as the G League, and indicate interest in travel tryouts; all travel players are also required to play in the G League. The site states that G League registration closes Oct. 31, after which a late registration fee applies.
