Hingham School Committee Ends Community Service Requirement, Shifts to Voluntary Model

HINGHAM -- March 24, 2025, Hingham School Committee votes 4-1 to end its community service pilot and move to a voluntary commendation model. High School Principal John Bucky presented survey data showing 93 percent freshman participation and finding that roughly two-thirds of students said they would volunteer regardless of any requirement, with 50 percent of non-participants citing time constraints. Bucky recommended against a graduation requirement and proposed instead a transcript commendation for students who complete 40 hours by the end of their junior year. Committee members raised equity concerns, noting that mandatory exceptions can themselves highlight socioeconomic differences, one member cited a story recounted by motivational speaker Kim Anthony. The committee also unanimously approved a redesigned 2025-2026 school calendar that flags religious and cultural observances with asterisks and explicitly guarantees students up to one week to make up work missed for religious observance.
