Hingham School Committee Approves Counselor Summer Work Agreement, Updates Food Service Policies

HINGHAM — March 23, 2026 — Hingham School Committee approves summer counselor agreement and four food service policies, hears business department review. The committee voted unanimously Monday to approve a memorandum of agreement with the Hingham Education Association Unit A covering additional summer workdays for secondary school counselors who handle course placement for incoming students. Four food service policies — including two new ones governing meal modifications and civil rights complaints — were also adopted on second read ahead of a state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education review. A formal program review of Hingham High School's business department, last reviewed in 2009, found strong community partnerships and instructional practice but noted that only 38 percent of the class of 2024 had taken any business course; an action plan calls for adding Microsoft certifications, formalizing DECA, and monitoring a possible state personal financial literacy graduation mandate. Member Carrie Nee reported that a review of 34 elementary schools across 13 comparable towns found Hingham was the only district with a second-grade section at the 25-student cap, prompting a recommendation that the policy subcommittee review class-size limits.
