HINGHAM — School Building Committee backs geothermal over air-source for high school HVAC. The Committee voted 5-2 to select ground-source geothermal (Option 1) for the Hingham High School roof and HVAC replacement project, advancing it into schematic design following presentations by tax consultant Jacob Goldman and Undaunted K-12 Co-Founder Sara Ross on federal IRA direct-pay tax credits and domestic-content compliance. The gross HVAC project cost is approximately 42 million dollars before incentives and MSBA reimbursement; Option 1's net present value after credits is approximately 16.5 million dollars, requiring roughly 14 to 15 million dollars more in up-front funding than air-source Option 3, translating to approximately 150 dollars annually in additional property tax per average home.
Facilities Director Matthew Meehan cited geothermal's significantly lower long-term maintenance requirements and vendor dependency compared to air-source systems.
