Hingham commits $3.6M to school roofs and boiler repairs

Hingham advances $3.6M capital budget as school buildings demand urgent repair. The Advisory Committee, meeting jointly with the Capital Outlay, Select Board, and School Committees on March 3, reviewed FY27 Capital Outlay recommendations totaling $3,600,000 from the tax levy and $30,000 from the Capital Stabilization Fund. Projects exceed available funding: the Hingham High School fire alarm system is estimated at $1.7 million and the East Elementary School Energy Recovery Unit at $860,000, both potentially funded from excess fund balance.
Plymouth River Elementary, recently evacuated over roof snow-load concerns, and Hingham High School, where a 27-year-old boiler has been repaired five times in the past month, are priorities for the district's approximately $72.8 million FY27 school budget.
