Commission approves chimney removal, continues major Main Street renovation review

Hingham's Historic Districts Commission unanimously approved removal of a non-original chimney from 160 South Street in the Lincoln Historic District Extension, with the work to be completed consistent with specifications dated December 22, 2025. The commission also voted unanimously to approve technical updates to its bylaws, including formatting corrections, gender-neutral language, and a new process allowing the commission to solicit nominations from relevant groups to fill vacancies before appointing candidates. The extended review of Mike Ahern's substantially revised proposal for 709 Main Street in the Glad Tidings Historic District—which includes restoration of the main house, a three-car garage with ADU, a redesigned pool house with ADU, and a recessed connector—was continued pending the applicant's redesign of the pool house and a site visit using story poles to assess overall massing and scale.
